Kashiwazaki Nuclear Power Plant
Kashiwazaki and Kariwa, Japan
SGH conducted several research tasks associated with the July 2007 Niigataken Chuetsu Oki (NCO) earthquake that affected the Kashiwazaki Nuclear Power Plant, the world's largest nuclear power plant. The research interpreted the effects of the earthquake and the assessed seismic risk and seismic margin as a result of the earthquake. Our work included mathematical modeling of the structures to match the measured earthquake response; a plant damage assessment following the earthquake; determination of the reasons the safety-related equipment experienced no damage when the seismic design basis was significantly exceeded.
